Women Finish with 7 Medals

Shawn Johnson (West Des Moines, Iowa) became just the fourth U.S. woman ever to win a world all-around title with her come-from-behind victory in the women’s all-around finals at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Nastia Liukin (Parker, Texas), the 2005 world all-around silver-medalist, finished fifth.

Also at the tournament, Liukin won the world balance beam title and placed second on the uneven bars. Johnson and Alicia Sacramone (Winchester, Mass.) went one-two in the floor exercise in the event finals while Sacramone finished third on the vault as well.

Jonathan Horton (Houston, Texas) finished fourth in the men’s all-around finals. David Durante of Garwood, N.J., finished 17th, giving the USA two top-20 finishes.

Liukin’s three medals at the 2007 World Championships brings her world medal tally to nine, tying her with Shannon Miller for most all time.

The U.S. women won seven medals overall including four gold, two silver and one bronze. It was the USA’s most successful showing at a team world championship.
